With hedgehogs now officially listed as vulnerable to extinction on the UK Red List, habitat fragmentation, such as fences and walls blocking their nightly travel routes, has become one of their biggest threats.
Research carried out for Dino Decking offers rich data on public attitudes toward wildlife-friendly gardens. Some key standout stats include:
-
-
41% of Brits have never seen a hedgehog in their garden, and 15% of homeowners have found a hedgehog trapped in their garden, unable to escape.
-
65% of respondents prefer fencing with built-in wildlife access, and 50% say a wildlife-friendly garden would make them more likely to buy a property.
-
61% of gardens contain hazards like steep drops, netting, or unfenced ponds, even though 47% of people actively leave out food or water.
-
To help raise awareness and provide practical solutions, Dino Decking has partnered with hedgehog rescue expert Julia Sixsmith, founder of Hindley Hedgehog Help, to launch a new campaign video highlighting Hedgehog Highways, which are small fence gaps that reconnect fragmented habitats.
To support this initiative, Dino Decking is giving away 5,000 free Hedgehog Highway fence panels, to new and existing customers, helping reconnect suburban gardens – click here. Over 1000 have already been claimed!
Mark writes: I’ve seen the survey data and it is based on 2000 responses and done in a respectable manner. Although this may look like an advert I have no financial interest in this company and it was the research results which interested me.
