Negotiation is not always easy, and sometimes the deal rots in the process. But you're usually better off knowing this than not knowing it.
Negotiation is an underrated part of getting a job these days. I don't know about you, but nobody really ever taught me how to negotiate. It wasn't a unit in grade school or anything. So most of what you learn you absorb from other people, or from doing it yourself. There's an art to it, though, and you have to know your worth if you want to make it far in this world. When you're handling a job offer, you don't want to get ahead of yourself and just agree. It might be tempting to drop everything to be able to say yes to a job, but you have more leverage than you think. It's a two-way street. You might want them, but they also want you. You have the ability to tell them what you're looking for, and they have to entertain that. This is what we come to the negotiation table with. You have your skills and your desires, and they have their needs and their resources. If you can't find a happy medium between those things, then it might not be a correct fit. The person in this story was in the frustrating middle of that kind of negotiation.
