Tesla CEO Elon Musk isn’t afraid of taking a chance. The EV maker wouldn’t even be here without a few risky moves by the enigmatic leader of the world’s largest electric vehicle maker.
The Model 3 and Model Y maybe the most successful bet Musk has taken. Full Self-Driving is the current “biggest gamble” and at just $99 a month, it’s an affordable “wager” for Tesla owners. Now, he’s trading one roll of the dice idea for another.
Musk plans to end production of his first pet project, the Cybertruck, at the company’s massive production plant just outside Austin, Texas. No confirmation has been given, but it’s likely to move to company’s first factory in California. The change comes so he can use that production capacity to build Cybercabs, the robotaxis Musk has been pitching at every turn for the past five years — perhaps longer.
The self-driving coupes are still in the trial stages in several cities around the U.S. but by getting more of them on the road, Musk is wagering he’ll get the approvals he needs to begin — finally — operating a massive fleet of self-driving cabs. Is he putting the cart before the horse? Is this a sucker bet by the world’s richest man — depending upon Tesla’s closing price each day?
