When General Motors Chair and CEO Mary Barra revealed in 2023 the automaker would begin phasing Apple CarPlay and Android Auto out of its vehicles in a few years the reaction was … quick and fierce.
Scores of potential GM owners lined up to say, “Goodbye [insert GM brand here]!” To be fair, GM’s native software isn’t too bad as owners of the automaker’s electric vehicles (EVs) could attest. Despite that lukewarm endorsement from EV buyers who were forced to use GM’s native system, users of the other systems — CarPlay in particular — are a loyal bunch.
Well, GM’s picked up on what those folks were putting down, and revealed Wednesday it plans to keep the two competing systems in its gas-powered vehicles, at least. The company showed off its new infotainment system for the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado, and it’s a hybrid of its native system and the other two.
In an automotive world where so many company’s sink with their ship, should GM be praised for its flexibility in this case? Let us know what you think.
