Zach Cregger’s new Resident Evil movie has sparked debate over its final scene, with fans split over the ending of the movie. While the movie has earned praise for its survival horror approach, its sudden and bleak conclusion has left some viewers questioning the payoff.
The ending centers on Bryan (Austin Abrams), an ordinary courier trying to survive an outbreak in Raccoon City while carrying a key part needed to make an antidote. After fighting his way through the infected city, Bryan reaches the Umbrella Corporation’s lab inside the general hospital and delivers the sample.
However, Bryan has already been bitten. As scientists finish the antidote, his body begins to change into a tentacled creature. During the chaos, the syringe containing the cure falls from the hospital and crashes onto the snowy ground.
Bryan then fully loses control as National Guard lights shine on him before the movie cuts to the credits.
Despite a historic Rotten Tomatoes score, some fans have criticized the ending for taking away the payoff after spending most of the movie following Bryan’s survival.

He further added, “I wish Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil had been trimmed down to about a 30-minute short film, including the intro and an extended ending only. 5.5/10.”

Cregger also revealed that the final scene was changed during production. The original version had the syringe break almost immediately, leading to a much more violent ending.
By delaying its destruction until the final moments, Cregger gave Bryan’s final scenes more tension and made the fate of the cure the movie’s last major shock.
