Director Zach Cregger is bringing a fresh vision of Resident Evil to the big screen, and he is well aware that purist fans of the video game franchise might balk at his narrative choices.
The upcoming survival horror reboot from Columbia Pictures is scheduled to hit theaters on September 18, 2026.
In a recent interaction with The Hollywood Reporter, Cregger detailed that there will be two types of fans. One, who would know that the original video game experience can never be replicated on the big screen. On the other hand, those searching for a video game legacy in the movie will be disappointed.
The filmmaker said, “Then there are fans of the games who specifically love the lore and the characters and the nitty-gritty details of the backstory. But my movie is not spending a lot of currency on those things. I’m not putting any of the legacy characters into this movie.”
He added, “So if that is what you love about these games, then you’re going to feel a certain way about it. Here comes yet another Hollywood movie, and they’re once again not doing Leon and all the characters I was hoping they were going to do.”
The 45-year-old filmmaker emphasized that his primary responsibility was not to please everyone but rather to construct the most compelling standalone horror movie possible.
