Sony and Constantin’s Resident Evil is on the verge of a major box office achievement. The horror franchise’s latest one needs just $600,000 to overtake A24’s Backrooms as 2026’s second-biggest horror release.

Resident Evil to hit $400 million and beat Backrooms at box office

Resident Evil has collected $399.99 million globally after seven weekends in theaters. The film’s split breaks down to $157.4 million domestically and $242.6 million internationally. Backrooms, which debuted May 29, 2026, has grossed $400.6 million worldwide (via Deadline). The gap between the two horror titles has narrowed to roughly $600,000 (via Box Office Mojo).

The horror franchise pulled in $10 million globally this past weekend alone, playing across 66 markets and more than 21,500 screens. That momentum should push it past Backrooms within days.

After all, Resident Evil has already passed several notable horror benchmarks. It outgrossed Sinners ($371.6 million), The Nun ($366 million), and Zach Cregger’s Weapons ($270 million). The recent release now sits $30 million shy of The Exorcist’s lifetime gross of $430 million.

International markets continue to drive the film’s success. China leads all territories with $71.4 million, followed by the UK at $19.4 million and Japan and Mexico tied at $12.7 million each. The movie has become the third-highest-grossing horror film ever in China and the biggest franchise installment globally.

The milestone also comes during a quiet stretch at the worldwide box office. Halloween dampened domestic turnout, and no major Hollywood wide releases hit theaters. IMAX collected only $6 million globally, with Resident Evil adding $900,000 to that number. Sony and Constantin have kept the horror property alive and profitable for years. This latest one proves the franchise still draws audiences worldwide, even against new competition like Backrooms.

All in all, Resident Evil should clear the $400 million mark and claim the number two horror spot of 2026 shortly. The question now is whether it can close the remaining $30 million gap to The Exorcist.
