Director Zach Cregger has shared his candid thoughts on the future of the Resident Evil franchise following the success of his latest blockbuster. The reboot is based on Capcom’s long-running survival horror video game series.

During an appearance on Matt Belloni’s The Town podcast, Cregger was asked whether he would be interested in future installments following the success of his film. “If there were five Resident Evil movies that you just produced but didn’t write or direct, you would be okay with that or not?” the host asked.

Cregger replied, “I would want to have some hand in them. I can’t help but have an idea for where that franchise, I’m calling it a franchise, where that could go.” His response suggests that he would like to remain creatively involved in future installments. However, the director didn’t confirm whether he would also be interested in returning behind the camera.

Resident Evil’s future could extend beyond Cregger’s 2026 movie

What is clear is that Cregger’s reboot has successfully launched a fresh cinematic era. Even if he chooses not to return as director, Sony Pictures could likely greenlight additional entries following the film’s dominant theatrical run. Produced on a $75 million budget, the 2026 horror entry has already grossed $400 million worldwide.

The movie’s ending also leaves the door wide open for a sequel. Throughout the story, Austin Abrams’ character, Bryan, fights his way through hordes of zombies inside Raccoon City. However, he is eventually bitten during his desperate struggle for survival. By the end, the mysterious virus inside him transforms him into a giant, deadly creature, setting the stage for a potential follow-up.

The climax strongly hints at the story continuing in future installments. However, it remains unclear whether a potential sequel will introduce fan-favorite Resident Evil characters such as Leon S. Kennedy, Claire Redfield, Ada Wong, and Chris Redfield.

Resident Evil is currently playing in theaters and arrives on digital platforms on November 3, 2026.
