Richard Linklater‘s next movie is a trilogy. However, there seems to be one huge hurdle that has plagued Linklater’s project. The project is reportedly about the Transcendentalists, a literary movement that included seminal thinkers like Margaret Fuller, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Henry David Thoreau.
Speaking with The Atlantic, Linklater has revealed that he is having a tough time getting the trilogy made. The film has been in the works for close to 20 years, and would function as a hangout film in the 1830s and 40s, where concepts such as Feminism, Environmentalism, and Abolitionism were taking root. As per World of Reel, the issue that is seemingly plaguing Linklater’s trilogy is adequate financing.
In 2025, the Boyhood director revealed that things were coming along well for the project. However, that has seemingly changed in the past year. Linklater has also noted that the figures he is looking to work with have never been depicted on screen. Speaking about Fuller, Emerson, and Thoreau, Linklater said, “There is always a lot of scholarship, a lot of books about them, because they are fundamental to the American experience.”
