BNY Expands XRP and RLUSD Custody Services

BNY has also announced the addition of XRP, the native token on the XRP Ledger, and Ripple’s USD-pegged RLUSD, a stablecoin to its Digital Asset Custody platform. The move builds upon a collaboration where BNY is currently the primary reserve custodian for RLUSD and has custody of Ripple Prime.

The new service aims to protect, collect and move digital assets by eligible institutional investors in BNY’s existing custody framework. This offers another way for financial institutions to manage XRP and RLUSD without having to use just crypto-native custody providers.

Additionally, BNY will collaborate with Ripple to give its clients the ability to mint and redeem RLUSD directly at the bank. The target functionality will make access to the stablecoin easier for those that qualify, but it hasn’t been revealed when this will be available.

Ripple’s president, Monica Long, said that they are moving past just issuing digital assets on blockchain networks to making them usable for financial markets, as payment and as collateral.

Ripple Targets Tokenized Trade Finance on XRPL

The partnership is also broader than just tokens to include investment products that may be introduced on the XRP Ledger. Ripple and BNY will look to mature these opportunities as use cases and institutional demand on the network grows.

They have also been looking at a project in the trade finance area, in collaboration with a global working-capital platform called C2FO. The aim of the effort is to reach a more invested audience for trade finance assets, such as approved receivables.

How Tokenized Receivables Could Work

A business could experience trade receivables when a customer orders and pays for a product before they receive it. These financial claims can be tokenized to give them a digital counterpart that can be managed and potentially given through a blockchain-based infrastructure.

Aligned loans and financing for approved receivables may be helpful for suppliers’ working-capital requirements during the payment delay. Depends on the structure of the assets and applicable requirements, but investors could also be able to receive a wider selection of financing options.

The Ripple-BNY-C2FO project is however at an exploratory stage. The announcement does not guarantee a live product, closed transactions or particular decreases in financing and settlement time.
