The Rivers State Police Command has removed two senior officers, including the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Abuloma Police Division, following allegations that suspected cultists renovated a police facility under their watch.

The second officer relieved of duty is the divisional officer in charge of the affected police outpost.

The action came after a viral video circulated online showing the group visiting the Abuloma Police Outpost on Thursday, October 15, 2026, to celebrate the completion of the renovation.

Commissioner of Police Olugbenga Adepoju announced the decision in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Friday by the command’s spokesperson, ASP Blessing Agabe.

The statement was titled “Rivers State Police Command Condemns Purported Renovation of Abuloma Police Outpost by Suspected Cultists, Relieves Officers, Orders Full Investigation.”

The command strongly condemned any action or association that could compromise the integrity, discipline, and professional standards of the Nigeria Police Force or appear to legitimise suspected cult groups or other unlawful organisations.

“Police facilities are public institutions established for the protection of citizens and the enforcement of law and must not become platforms through which criminal groups seek public validation or influence,” the statement said.

It added that under CP Adepoju’s leadership, the command maintains zero tolerance for criminality and any conduct that undermines public confidence in the police.

Consequently, the DPO of Abuloma Division and the officer overseeing the outpost have been queried and relieved of their duties pending the outcome of a full investigation.

The probe will examine the circumstances of the incident, the identities and backgrounds of those who financed or facilitated the renovation, whether the project was properly authorised, if due procedures were followed, and whether any officer breached professional standards or compromised the force’s integrity.

The command noted that it welcomes legitimate community support for improving police facilities, in line with Section 26(1)(d) of the Nigeria Police Act 2020, which allows gifts and contributions to the Police General Fund.

However, such support must not compromise police independence, professional standards, or security.“No donation or assistance confers immunity from investigation or prosecution,” the statement emphasised.

It stressed that the command will not condone unprofessional conduct or any improper association with criminal elements by police officers.Anyone found culpable will face appropriate disciplinary and legal action.

The public was urged to remain calm and continue providing credible information to support security efforts in Rivers State.

In the viral footage, the individuals dressed in black trousers and white shirts, some wearing red fez caps or black berets appeared to pose as students, chanting “greatest Nigerian students” before using what seemed to be cult-related slogans.

They were seen celebrating in front of the renovated facility alongside some police officers.
