Robert Pattinson's performance in Twilight was actually a really great critical understanding of the character and any other actor would have played him differently. How much did this contribute to the success of the films, even if it wasn't acknowledged in that way at the time?

Any other actor in that era would have played that character in a pretty similar look at me I'm so sexy and broody way. RPatz embodies Edward as a really complex, self-hating but also rigid and obsessive old man. It was genuinely a very layered performance and accurately captured the character in a way that was also fairly critical of the book character.

I know the 'Robert Pattinson actually hated Twilight' folklore is a bit tired and worn - I'm more interested in talking about how his critical performance was actually a really interesting one and how it may have impacted the success.

I genuinely reckon these films would not have been so successful with a blander performance even if the 12 year old girl demographic might make it seem that way on the surface.
