J.D. and Elliot engage in a serious conversation about their broken marriage in the latest episode of Scrubs. The idea for this informal meeting comes to J.D. while caring for an elderly patient who recalls happier times with her deceased husband. Remembering his own marriage, he asks his ex-wife, Elliot, to join him for dinner, where they discuss why their relationship didn’t work out.
The future of J.D. and Elliot’s relationship remains uncertain in ScrubsOver dinner, Elliot and J.D. speak about their respective lives, following their divorce. J.D. revealed that he used to spray Elliot’s perfume on a body pillow and place an ice pack against his legs in her memory. Meanwhile, Elliot mentioned that she slept with the gym trainer, Cody. Later, they went for a late-night walk, where J.D. said that their marriage should have worked out. Elliot replied that it didn’t and that their happy ending was to remain friends.
Appearing unconvinced by the answer, J.D. said that maybe he made a poor decision by leaving Sacred Heart for private practice, given that he has lost meaning in his life. In the process, he also pushed away Elliot, further adding that he really feels lost and doesn’t know how to become the person she initially fell in love with. Elliot further explained to him that she would have been there through thick and thin and that he shouldn’t have shut her out. Feeling sorry for his actions, J.D. said that revisiting Sacred Heart made him reflect on the choices he made and what he really wants. He confesses that he cannot live without her.
Elliot was hesitant about reconciliation, as she was aware of the history of things ending up badly between them. Before planting a kiss on her, J.D. added, “It only has to end right once.” While this scene made everyone believe that their story got a second chance, it was just J.D.’s daydream, as he sat beside a patient.
