It was unclear what prompted the response, although multiple reports said that emergency officials were dealing with an “active threat.”
In an update issued just before midnight, Peel police said no injuries had been reported and that the incident was “isolated and contained to a single residential unit in the area of Mississauga Rd. and Inner Circle on the UTM campus.
“The immediate area has been evacuated and residents are being asked to shelter in place,” the update said. “Members of the public are being asked to avoid the area.”

The school’s campus status map said in an update at about 11 p.m. that police had confirmed that shots were fired in the area and that they had secured the surrounding area.
School officials said in a statement to the Toronto Sun that they were “aware of police activity on the University of Toronto Mississauga campus and have issued an alert to the campus community to shelter-in-place.
“Alerts will continue to be sent every 30 minutes until police deem the area safe,” the statement said, referring further comment to police.
The school’s campus status map advised students to shelter in place “until further instructions” and to keep roads, routes or walkways clear for emergency personnel.
Anyone on campus is urged to stay 30 m away from entrances to affected buildings and to not return to affected buildings until told it is safe to do so by campus security or police.
