In Bad Magpie, you play as a little magpie that has wounded their wings. Now that the world has given you a bad time, you will be fighting back by setting things on fire, smashing places up and taking what you want most; something shiny!
You can find different shiny objects throughout each of the levels, which you then trade in for trinkets that your magpie especially wants. The world feels quite big, but at the same time, you are sort of led around through chasing the shiny objects and various puzzles that present themselves. Sometimes these puzzles have you striking rocks to set things on fire or getting your head stuck in walls, then tearing them down.
Your end goal in Bad Magpie is actually to cure your own loneliness, which is something that has come about through the loss of your flock when you were injured. There seems to be enough trinkets to find some sort of friendship. The world is non-linear, open, and there are lots of things to meddle in and peck away with. There are tons of different puzzles, many of which can be solved a number of ways, and it’s quite fun shouting at small mice and jumping on giant pianos.
In the limited demo I got to play at Gamescom, I very much fell in love with this little bird and their story. Being unable to fly is such a small thing, but one that adds a lot of fun and mystery into your world. I found a lot of shiny objects and even a dragon who had a particularly fantastic trinket that you very much want.
There isn’t currently a release date for Bad Magpie, but you can wishlist the game on Steam to find out when the chaos will be released.
