Spider-Man: Brand New Day reportedly features a sweet reference to Zendaya’s family. The Marvel film features two children whose names refer to the actor’s relatives. Fans have started noticing the connection, adding another layer to the film’s many hidden details.
@cosmic_marvel shared on X that Jean DeWolff’s children, EJ and Marlee, share their names with Zendaya’s nephew and niece. The discovery offers a personal connection that viewers could easily miss. It also adds to the smaller details fans have been discussing since the film’s release.
The Zendaya Easter egg is just one of several details worth noticingBeyond the Zendaya reference, Brand New Day includes several callbacks to earlier Spider-Man stories and the wider Marvel universe. Some connect to Peter Parker’s past, while others point to familiar comic characters.
One interesting detail involves Ned Leeds’ Instagram username, @thegratefulned42. The name references the Grateful Dead, while the number 42 connects to the genetically engineered spider that gives Miles Morales his powers in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The number also honors Jackie Robinson, the baseball legend who broke Major League Baseball’s color barrier.
The film also includes a callback to Spider-Man: Far From Home. MJ continues wearing the broken Black Dahlia necklace Peter gave her, even though she no longer remembers him after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home. The accessory adds emotional weight to their relationship and hints at the connection they once shared.
Peter’s changing powers provide another nod to previous Spider-Man films. He develops the ability to produce organic webbing, much like Tobey Maguire’s version in Sam Raimi’s trilogy. The sequence also reportedly recreates camera angles from the 2002 film.
Other references include the Manfredi crime family, previously featured in Agent Carter, and the Department of Damage Control, which has appeared throughout the MCU.
While these references reward longtime Marvel fans, the reported Zendaya Easter egg is different. Rather than drawing on superhero lore, it appears to honor the actor’s family through two small character details.
