Washing dishes seemed reasonable with a playlist going. In silence, I have questions about why I ever started. Now I'm standing in my kitchen holding a dish and hearing the refrigerator for the first time all evening. Was it making that noise the entire time? Apparently, it did. I clearly preferred the song.
Even a walk feels longer when you can hear every car passing instead of the song you picked for leaving the house. And what about going to the gym? Boring. So boring.
The first reaction is to stare at the app. You close it, open it again, refresh it, check the Wi-Fi even though every other app is working… Then you repeat those steps with more annoyance, until you get tired of it and ask your friends if Spotify is down. Finding out other people are having the same problem will be a relief, yes. At least you can stop blaming your headphones.
This also means there will be memes, because we can survive without music long enough to complain about having no music. These Spotify memes are for that brief interruption when you discover how much background music was doing for your day. You can laugh at the panic while admitting that you, too, tried opening the app again three times in the last fifteen minutes. Once the music comes back, I'll happily return to the dishes. Until then, the frying pan can soak. It probably needed more time anyway.
