Stephen Colbert says writing the new Lord of the Rings movie is a full-time job

Stephen Colbert revealed that writing the new Lord of the Rings movie keeps him extremely busy. The former Late Show host spoke to journalists backstage after winning at the 2026 Emmy Awards on Sept. 14, The Hollywood Reporter reported.

“That’s what I’m doing,” Colbert told reporters about his writing schedule. “That takes a lot of time, man. You ever written a Lord of the Rings movie? It’s a full-time job.”

Colbert is co-writing the film alongside Philippa Boyens and Peter McGee. The project marks the second of two upcoming installments in the franchise. Producers announced his involvement in March, shortly after The Late Show ended its run.

The comedian flew directly from New Zealand to attend the ceremony. “Literally, I woke up in New Zealand yesterday. I flew here for the Emmys,” Colbert said backstage. He added that the time zone shift left him disoriented during his acceptance speech.

Meanwhile, Colbert joked about his post-show unemployment during an E! News interview. “I think the Jimmys have got that locked down for right now,” he said about returning to late night. He also quipped, “For an unemployed person, I’m very busy.” His wife Evie McGee added that she was tired of “him forgetting to tell me things.”

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert won the Outstanding Variety Series award at the ceremony. The show also earned trophies for picture editing, lighting design, technical direction, directing, and writing across both ceremonies. This marked the show’s third variety series trophy during Colbert’s tenure as host.

“Thank you so much on behalf of the over 200 people who threw themselves at this show for 11 years,” Colbert said during his speech. He called late-night TV a “fantastic incubator for young people.”

The 2026 Emmy Awards took place at the Peacock Theater in Downtown Los Angeles.
