PROVIDENCE, RI—In breakthrough research that upends prevailing notions of human cognitive capacity, a new study published Wednesday by scientists at Brown University found that the brain is capable of storing up to 40 things. “We’ve always known the human brain is a remarkable repository of information, but until now, we thought that meant five or six things at most—boy, were we mistaken,” said cognitive psychologist Melanie Vicker, highlighting one test subject who demonstrated the ability to recall their name, the names of some family members, eight colors, five shapes, a handful of BTS songs, and a few animals. “The participants in our study were just ordinary people, not savants. Now that we know what our brains are truly capable of, the next question is how do we help more people unlock that potential so that everyone can store most of the alphabet, some presidents, and the name of a body part?” At press time, Vicker had forgotten the study ever existed after all knowledge of it was forced out of her brain by learning the day’s weather.
