Sylvester Stallone built one of the most recognizable action franchises in Hollywood with a character who became synonymous with survival, combat, and relentless determination as John Rambo. However, the series didn’t begin with the explosive spectacle audiences would come to expect.
Its first installment took a more grounded approach, introducing a troubled veteran whose conflict with a small-town police department set the story in motion. That film, First Blood (1982), is widely regarded as one of Stallone’s strongest action performances. The franchise later moved toward larger-scale action with Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985) and Rambo III (1988).
Both sequels expanded John Rambo’s adventures, but their approach also marked a significant shift from the original film. All three movies are now heading to Paramount+ on November 1, giving subscribers an opportunity to revisit the early chapters of the franchise.
The lineup includes the film that introduced Rambo and two sequels that helped turn him into a major action hero. However, the selection also leaves out two later entries in the series.
What to know about Sylvester Stallone’s three action movies on Paramount+The three films arriving on Paramount+ are First Blood, Rambo: First Blood Part II, and Rambo III. Their November 1 release brings together the first three installments of the franchise, although the collection does not cover the complete story of Stallone’s iconic character.
The original First Blood stands apart from its successors because of its more restrained portrayal of Rambo. Released in 1982, the film follows the former Green Beret as he faces mistreatment from local law enforcement.
Rather than presenting him as an unstoppable killing machine, the story focuses on a veteran struggling to adjust to civilian life. Rambo also does not deliberately kill anyone in the original film, making its approach notably different from the sequels.
The franchise took a conventional action direction with Rambo: First Blood Part II. Released in 1985, the sequel sent Rambo on a mission to Vietnam and delivered the larger combat sequences that audiences increasingly associated with the character.
It became a major commercial success, earning more than $300 million worldwide. Rambo III, released in 1988, continued that shift with another large-scale mission. Together, the first three movies laid the foundation for the $819 million worldwide.
