Ted Lasso Season 4 had something big planned for a major character before the actor passed away. Apparently, the Apple TV+ series’ creators intended to bring Anthony Head‘s villainous Rupert Mannion back to the screen in Season 4 in an iconic way. However, those plans were put to rest when the actor tragically passed away at the age of 72 on June 1, 2026.
As shared by the show’s co-creator, executive producer, and star Brendan Hunt recently, “We had an outside hope of bringing him back in the last episode.” Per Deadline Hollywood, Hunt continued, “We were told that that was not going to be possible. So yeah, we had an idea for a little thing, but it was not going to happen.”
Though Head battled with severe health issues prior to his death from pneumonia complications, details about the same have not been made public. So the cast had automatically assumed that the star would be joining them until the end of Season 4, which Hunt co-wrote with fellow Ted Lasso co-creator, executive producer, and star Jason Sudeikis.
As Annette Badland, who played Mae on the show, told the outlet, “I assumed he would be in this last [season], and didn’t know, as I think very few people knew, he was ill and just couldn’t do it.”
While they couldn’t do that, the showrunners instead settled on referencing the character a few times in Season 4 and paid tribute to the actor.
