A Texas sheriff’s deputy got the spook of his life and a good laugh during a recent late-night encounter with a deer he mistook for dead on the side of the road.
In a dash-camera video posted on Facebook by Trinity County Sheriff Woody Wallace, the deputy stands next to the motionless animal, pointing a flashlight at it.
But then it suddenly gets up, surprising the cop, who screams and shouts, “It’s awake!”
He runs out of camera view, letting out more high-pitched screams, but then quickly recovers from the shock, laughing and saying, “OK, we’re good.”
In the Facebook post, Wallace joked about the incident which happened on Aug. 28, writing, “Instead of a citation, the ‘suspect’ made a four-legged getaway and vanished into the East Texas woods.”
He added, “Just another night shift where anything can happen.”
Deer is OK, officer says
The deputy also said the doe “made a full recovery.”
In a follow-up post, Wallace reassured many who were concerned about the deer’s well-being, telling his followers that it was “only stunned and got back on its feet after a few minutes.”
He also said, “We can also officially confirm there will be no deer meat served at the Trinity County Jail tonight.”
According to the deputy, the video garnered more than 10 million views, with some Facebook users getting a chuckle out of the incident.
“Listen I don’t wanna hear any of yall until you’re in the dark, alone, next to something SUPPOSED to be dead,” said one sympathetic commentator. “When the unexpected happens, you can expect to be scared.”
Another person chimed in, “Hilarious! Send this to America’s Funniest Videos!”
