Based on the set photos, the film appears to have a period setting, although the studio has yet to reveal any plot details. The costumes and props have sparked curiosity about the era in which the new adventure will take place.
Rachel Weisz’s return is just one part of what The Mummy 4 has in storeWeisz last played Evelyn O’Connell alongside Brendan Fraser in 2001’s The Mummy Returns. She did not return for the third installment, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, released in 2008. Maria Bello took over the role in that film.
Now, nearly 25 years after their last appearance together in the franchise, Weisz and Fraser are reuniting as Evelyn and Rick O’Connell. The sequel will also bring back several familiar faces, including John Hannah as Jonathan, Oded Fehr as Ardeth Bay, and Kevin J. O’Connor as Beni Gabor.
New cast members Michael Johnston and Numan Acar will also join the adventure. However, their characters and the film’s central conflict remain under wraps.
The original The Mummy, released in 1999, followed librarian and Egyptologist Evelyn as she joined adventurer Rick O’Connell on an expedition to the ancient city of Hamunaptra. The 2001 sequel continued their story as a married couple raising their son, Alex.
Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett are directing the new installment, with David Coggeshall penning the script. The duo previously worked on Scream and Ready or Not. Universal has also moved up the film’s theatrical release date. The Mummy 4 was initially scheduled to hit theaters on May 19, 2028, but will now arrive on October 15, 2027.
