Apple’s iPad mini isn’t all that good of a deal right now. For one, it hasn’t been updated in two years. For another, it’s the only iPad that still has the camera on the portrait side. And finally, it costs as much as the iPad Air used to after Apple raised the price by $100 in June.
That could all change in just a few weeks. We’ve been hearing about an iPad mini update for months, and according to a new report from MacRumors, it could be coming soon. Based on a leak from “Apple’s own code,” a new iPad mini could arrive next month with several new features, including a landscape front-facing camera and Apple’s newest A20 Pro processor.
The current iPad mini uses an A17 Pro processor, which was the previous-generation processor at the time of its release. The current A19 Pro processor is incredibly powerful and would give the iPad mini an incredible speed boost and 50 percent more RAM–12GB versus 8GB in the A17 Pro.
The landscape camera would also be a significant upgrade, as the iPad mini is Apple’s only tablet to still feature a portrait-style camera. That redesign likely coincides with an upgrade to an OLED display that has been rumored for a while. It’s also been reported that Apple is planning to shrink the bezels and slightly increase the screen size.
Apple increased the price of the iPad mini along with its other tablets in June. The 128GB model now starts at $599, though it’s possible Apple bumps the price again with such a significant upgrade.
