ComingSoon is exclusively revealing the trailer for The Squirrel, the next film from Finnish writer-director Markus Lehmusruusu. The absurdist sci-fi comedy is set in a world without nature or animals, following a lonely man who starts taking care of the last squirrel in the world. The Squirrel, originally titled Orava, was selected as the Finnish entry for Best International Feature Film at the 99th Academy Awards.
“In the far future, in a sterile world without nature or animals, Pasi, a lonely designer of synthetic pets, unexpectedly discovers the last surviving squirrel. He decides to defy the rules and keep it alive, but things don’t go quite according to plan: the squirrel gets depressed, Pasi falls in love, and his carefully controlled life begins to unravel,” says the official synopsis.

What do we see in The Squirrel trailer?The Squirrel trailer starts by introducing Parsi (Miro Lopperi), a designer of synthetic animals who wonders about the history of real animals. Shut down by most of his colleagues, Parsi finds a real squirrel near the trash collector, and chooses to take it in. Fascinated by the little animal, Parsi decides to keep it company while hiding it from a woman he’s interested in at work. The rest of the trailer shows the woman trying to find out Parsi’s secret, and eventually meeting the squirrel.
The trailer also shows Parsi’s employer trying to find and exterminate the animal that has been trying to gnaw at the electrical wiring in its building. The trailer also hints at absurd plot turns including the squirrel getting depressed.
The Squirrel was shot by Max Smeds F.S.C., with Freya Arde serving as its music composer. The film was shot across Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, and Sweden. Before The Squirrel, Lehmusruusu was known for helming Ricky Rapper and the Strongman, which became the most-watched Finnish film in the country in 2019. He also co-directed TV shows like Kakarat and Lovi.
The Squirrel will have its international premiere at Fantastic Fest at the Alamo Drafthouse on Lamar in Austin, Texas, later this September. The film has been confirmed to be 92 minutes long.
