In 2010, French inventor Eric Beau developed a towable caravan that could telescope sideways to expand its footprint. Sixteen years later Beau runs Beauer, a company that manufactures several iterations of his unique design. Their latest model is the X8, which uses electric motors to triple the caravan's footprint:
The interior can be ordered with one bedroom or two:
Because the sofa units also each fold out into double beds, Beauer reckons the two-bedroom model can sleep eight people.
Looking at the design, one has to wonder: Where does all of the furniture go when the caravan is compressed for transport? The company doesn't say, but this video of one of their smaller models shows everything folding away:
The extra space the X8 provides comes at a weight cost. At 2,600 kilograms (5,732 pounds), in the 'States you'd need a V8-powered Ford F-150 or Silverado to pull the thing. In its native European market, the X8 would have to be paired with a diesel-powered Mercedes GL-class SUV or similar.
The X8 runs €109,990 (USD $123,100).
