The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto was voted the world’s best children’s hospital in a recent survey.
Titled World’s Best Specialized Hospitals 2027, by Newsweek and Statista had a panel of experts from around the world vote on the best 250 pediatric hospitals.
“Being No. 1 is an extraordinary honour,” said Dr. Ronald Cohn, president and CEO of SickKids “Achieving No. 1 back-to-back reflects the excellence, dedication and shared purpose that define SickKids every day. This recognition belongs to the staff, trainees, volunteers, donors and community who stand behind our mission and make our work for children and families possible.”
This achievement also marks the sixth consecutive year the hospital has ranked among the world’s top two pediatric hospitals and the third time it has earned the top position. SickKids also topped the list in the 2026 rankings.
“This analysis highlights hospitals that excel in specialized fields and offers valuable insight into global leaders in clinical excellence,” the release said.
Numerous disciplines ranked
A total of 13 medical disciplines, including cardiac surgery, cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, nephrology, neurology, neurosurgery, oncology, orthopedics, pediatrics, pulmonology, urology and obstetrics & gynecology, were included in the ranking.
“Finding exceptional care for complex health conditions is not always as simple as choosing a highly regarded hospital,” the survey said. “Strengths often differ by specialty, making it important to identify institutions with proven expertise in specific areas of medicine.”
The survey said SickKids’ “standout treatments” were cardiology, oncology and neonatology.
Boston Children’s Hospital was ranked No. 2, while Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia rounded out the top three.
The rankings were based on three data pillars, including reputation, accreditation and a Patient Reported Outcome Measure (PROM) implementation score. A PROM is a questionnaire completed by a patient to assess well-being and quality of life.
Reputation was weighted at 83.5% of the overall score. Accreditation accounted for 10%, while PROMs were the lease weighted, at 6.5%.
Two Canadian hospitals made the top 20, with BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver ranked No. 9 and Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary ranked 15th.
