U.S. President Donald Trump has suggested renaming the Strait of Hormuz in his honor, declaring the strategic waterway “under American control” as clashes with Iran intensify.
Trump floated the idea in a social media post on Wednesday, writing: “Now that we have it under USA control, should we change the name Hormuz Strait to TRUMP STRAIT? Like America itself, it would be ‘hotter’ than ever before!”
The remark came after U.S. strikes on Iranian targets, including one Tehran claimed hit a residential building hosting a wedding in Kuhestak, Sirik County, killing at least four people.
Iran responded with missile and drone attacks on U.S.-linked sites across the region, further raising fears over the security of the waterway.
The Strait of Hormuz, a vital global oil-shipping route, has become the focal point of the conflict.
Washington insists it is working to keep commercial navigation open, while Tehran maintains control of the strait. Shipping traffic has already dropped below pre-war levels, pushing oil prices higher.
Saudi Arabia accused Iran of attacking an oil tanker in the region, killing two sailors, while the UK Maritime Trade Operations agency reported continued incidents involving vessels near the strait.
The escalating hostilities have heightened international concern over energy supplies and the stability of one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints.
