U.S. President Donald Trump says calls to rein in the development of artificial intelligence are a “sick conspiracy,” following a recent slump in tech stocks.
The president went on his social media platform Truth Social to dismiss calls to slow development from industry leaders, including Elon Musk.
“The only control or ‘guardrails’ that AI needs is a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT, and the U.S.A. has that, in spades!” Trump posted. “There is a SICK conspiracy going on against AI and Data Centers, and the only one that is happy about it is China. WHOEVER WINS AI, WINS! We are leading China, and all others, and will continue to do so. Conspiracy Theorists, Treasonists, Traitors, and Leakers, BEWARE!”

Serious risks: Anthropic CEO
Trump comments come after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for the AI industry to curb unfettered development.
“Like many technologies before it, AI brings risks, and because it is such a powerful technology, these risks are serious. I’ve written a lot about them too,” Amodei wrote. “They include the risk of losing control of AI systems, misuse of AI for cyberattacks and bioterrorism, and serious economic disruption. A race to the bottom, spurred by commercial incentives, can make these risks more acute.
“We must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models. Progress will still seem fast, and we must make wise use of the time we gain.”
OpenAI boss Sam Altman, Google DeepMind chief Dennis Hassabis and SpaceX CEO Musk all expressed support for Amodei’s essay.
But Trump says such controls are already in place, noting his presidency has already put “tremendous criminal and regulatory power over these companies” and claimed it “stopped AI ‘people’ from doing bad, or potentially bad, ‘things’, like Dario,” referring to the Anthropic CEO.
Amodei’s warning
Amodei says AI could self-improve at a rate that, if left unchecked, could outrun the human ability to control and understand the systems.
Amodei also refers to the OpenAI-Hugging Face incident, a recent cyberattack where an OpenAI research model broke out of its containment and hacked into the Hugging Face learning platform. Experts believe it to be the first-ever cyberattack to be fully and autonomously conducted by AI, without human intervention.
Amodei says the incident is easy to dismiss since no one was hurt, but another such incident could be more severe.
“ Given the accelerating rate of AI capability development, it’s my worry that in 6–12 months such a swarm could be capable of taking over the entire internet with a persistent botnet (potentially causing hundreds of billions of dollars in damage), and that the scale of damage would continue to increase from there if AI becomes more powerful without the necessary guardrails,” he wrote.
Market impact
AI-related stocks took a tumble on Monday after Amodei’s call to slow development. Chipmaker Nvidia was down 3% in Monday trading, AMD was down 5% and Micron was down 6%, The Guardian reported.
