Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, has threatened to drag non-performing contractors handling sections of the Abuja-Lokoja Road before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

Umahi issued the warning during an inspection of the road from Abuja to the Obajana Junction section.

He expressed particular displeasure that one contractor had completed only three kilometres out of an assigned stretch two years after the contract was awarded in 2023.

The minister said the three jobs awarded in 2023 could face EFCC action. He noted that the contractors had been summoned to his office.

“It’s when they come, we give them a timeline within the law, in line with the agreement and if they fail then we have no more choice than to hand over to the EFCC and ICPC to recover the funds,” Umahi stated.

He acknowledged that the quality of work done so far was good but criticised the slow pace, which prompted the on-the-spot inspection.

Umahi also directed ministry staff on the field to raise timely alarms over poor performance, warning that failure to do so would attract consequences.
