A 41-year-old Vaughan man has been charged following a hit-and-run earlier this month.

According to York Regional Police, a woman was walking northbound on Pine Valley Dr. from Major Mackenzie Dr. on Oct. 4 at about 8:30 p.m. when she was struck by a vehicle also traveling northbound. Police said the vehicle fled from the scene.

Police said they obtained video of the suspect’s vehicle, described as a white Mercedes Sprinter van, and said that the debris at the scene allegedly belonged to same make of van.

Kamel Hazime was charged on Oct. 16 with failure to stop after an accident resulting in death.

The vehicle involved in the incident remains outstanding.

The cops are reminding the public that anyone who assists with concealing, repairing or altering the vehicle to avoid detection may be committing a criminal offence and could face charges. This includes anyone who performs or arranges body work, paint work or mechanical repairs intended to conceal damage.

Investigators are urging anyone who has worked on the vehicle or are in the process of carrying out a repair to stop immediately and contact the major collision unit.

More charges laid in romance scam probe

A Durham Region man previously charged in a romance fraud investigation is facing additional charges.

On Aug. 31, members of the Durham Regional Police financial crimes unit arrested Salvatore Malandrino, 41, of Marmora, following an investigation into allegations that multiple women were financially exploited while in a romantic relationship with him.

Following a police news conference on Sept. 3 regarding the investigation, additional victims stepped forward and provided police with additional information.

Malandrino has now been charged with three additional offences, including fraud over $5,000 and making a false statement to procure a loan.

Previously, Malandrino was accused of defrauding five victims out of more than $1 million. He remains in custody.

Investigators continue to have concerns that there may be additional victims.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the financial crimes unit at 1-888-579-1520, Ext. 2950.

Anonymous information can also be sent to Durham Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
