Four siblings trapped in their car after a rollover crash on a Kentucky freeway were rescued by a state trooper who was just driving past the accident scene.
The dramatic rescue, which happened on Aug. 14 on Interstate 65 South near Elizabethtown, was captured on police bodycam footage shared by the Kentucky State Police last week.
In the video, the state trooper uses an expandable baton to break the front windshield of the car, which is lying on its side on a stretch of grass by the freeway.
He tells the vehicle’s occupants to close their eyes as he hacks away at the windshield.
Once he breaks it and pulls away the debris, he helps guide them safely out of the vehicle, telling them to “watch the glass.”
The video shows the four siblings with cuts and scrapes on the grass, while the trooper tells them EMS was on its way.
It was a race against time
Speaking to local news station WLKY , Trooper Blaine Miller said he saw smoke coming from the vehicle and knew the situation was urgent.
“I knew that we were on the clock to try to get them out of the vehicle,” Miller said.
The four siblings were reportedly on their way to Mammoth Cave National Park when a semi-truck driver merged into their lane, pushing them off the road.
“I was trying to figure out how to get out,” one of the siblings, Samantha Bloom, told WLKY. “So I went for my skylight and was trying to open the skylight of the car.”
Bloom said she’s thankful Miller was there at the right time, adding, “yeah, I don’t think we’d be here without him.”
