A 1995 thriller featuring Nicole Kidman and Joaquin Phoenix is getting another brief streaming window before it disappears from Netflix. The acclaimed film is one of the most notable releases from the decade, with a cast that makes this one worth revisiting.

The dark thriller will leave Netflix next week

Netflix viewers have limited time left to catch the movie on the platform. What’s on Netflix currently lists To Die For as available on Netflix until Oct. 7, 2026. The film pairs Nicole Kidman with a young Phoenix, Matt Dillon and Casey Affleck. Gus Van Sant directed the movie from a screenplay by Buck Henry, adapted from Joyce Maynard’s novel.

Suzanne Stone (Nicole Kidman) sees murder as just another step toward becoming a television star in To Die For. She becomes convinced that her husband Larry is standing between her and the broadcasting career she desperately wants. She draws teenage Jimmy (Joaquin Phoenix), a troubled and vulnerable boy, into her scheme and manipulates him into killing Larry.

Instead of fearing the fallout, Suzanne welcomes the publicity surrounding her husband’s death, treating the tragedy as a chance to push herself further into the spotlight. Her plan eventually backfires when Larry’s father, who has ties to organized crime, arranges for a hitman to take revenge.

Its reputation among critics remains particularly strong. Rotten Tomatoes currently gives the movie an 88% Tomatometer score from 68 reviews, while its audience score sits at 66% from more than 25,000 ratings. The movie earned glowing praise for its examination of America’s fascination with celebrity culture.

However, few have found the movie dated or less effective on rewatch. IMDb currently records a 6.8/10 rating from about 61,000 users. The countdown is already underway for Netflix viewers. Anyone planning to revisit the 1995 thriller should make room for it soon, as the movie will disappear from the streaming service on Oct. 7.
