The grandmasters were almost perfect, while beginners struggled. But when he repeated the test using pieces placed randomly across the board, the grandmasters performed no better than the beginners. Their memory advantage vanished instantly.

This proved that strong players do not have better brains or photographic memories. Beginners analyse 32 individual pieces one by one, which quickly drains mental energy. Grandmasters use a process called chunking, grouping pieces into familiar shapes, pawn structures, and danger zones. When the board was random, there were no patterns to chunk together, forcing them to memorise individual pieces just like everyone else.

Brain imaging now shows that this constant pattern recognition physically rewires your brain through neuroplasticity. In the late 1970s, Venezuela introduced chess into schools, expecting kids to just get better at the game. Instead, their logical reasoning, problem solving, and math scores improved across the board. The mental habits of evaluating a move and checking for threats directly transferred into everyday thinking.

The real takeaway for beginners is that being bad at chess has nothing to do with intelligence. Staring at 32 loose pieces is exhausting because your brain has not built its library of patterns yet. As you play more games, your brain stops calculating every single square and begins reading the board effortlessly.
