For me, it's dreams. I don't know if I can cite a single dream sequence from a (fiction) book that reads as authentic and captures the feeling of a dream. And that's understandable! Dreaming is such a strange phenomenon that is incredibly hard to describe through language alone. But for that reason, I wish authors would just avoid writing detailed dreams (vague references to themes or feelings in dreams are usually fine), it always takes me out of the story. Either they're so straightforward and hitting you over the head with their obvious meaning it's eye-roll worthy, or they're so fanciful and wrought with metaphor it's...eye-roll worthy.
Is there something you think basically no author can get right?
