If you have ever fought your own dashboard to change the temperature in your car or answer a phone call, the data now backs you up. Infotainment systems have become the single largest source of complaints from new-car owners, and while nearly every other part of the modern vehicle is getting better, the screens are stuck in place. Roughly a quarter of everything owners gripe about now traces back to the multimedia stack.


That figure comes from JD Power, which surveys tens of thousands of new-car buyers and lessees about their problems and then sells the aggregated data to the companies building the parts. The short version for a shopper: the touchscreen is now the weakest link in an otherwise improving product, and the companies making these systems have every financial incentive to keep it that way.


The headline number is that infotainment accounts for 25 percent of all vehicle problems and is the only category to worsen year over year. That phrasing deserves a small asterisk. Multimedia problems themselves are essentially flat at 42.4 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100), a metric where a lower number means fewer headaches. The category's share of total complaints grew because everything else improved while infotainment did not. The screens did not get dramatically worse in absolute terms; they simply failed to keep pace.


That distinction matters, but it does not let anyone off the hook. When a car company makes real progress on climate controls, seats, powertrain, and driving assistance, and then leaves the software stagnant, the screen ends up carrying an outsized share of the blame. The five most frequently reported problems in the entire vehicle now all fall under multimedia.


The measurement rests on a large sample. The most recent U.S. Multimedia Quality and Satisfaction Study is based on responses from 78,514 purchasers and lessees of new-model-year vehicles surveyed after 90 days of ownership. Ninety days is important context: these are not worn-out systems failing after years of abuse. Owners are frustrated within their first three months.

Dig into what actually annoys people, and a clear pattern emerges. It is not exotic failures. It is the basic act of pairing a smartphone to a car. In JD Power's long-term dependability study, four of the top five industry problems tie directly to mobile phone integration. The single most common complaint in the entire industry, for a third consecutive year, is Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity at 8.9 PP100.


Add in built-in Bluetooth systems at 5.5 PP100, wireless charging pads at 5.1 PP100, and automaker app connectivity at 4.7 PP100, and these four issues total 24.2 PP100. That is nearly half of the infotainment category all by itself. In other words, the most sophisticated screens on the market are stumbling over the one task owners care about most: talking reliably to the phone already in their pocket.


Not everything is deteriorating. Navigation problems declined, and satisfaction with in-car navigation rose to 933 on a 1,000-point scale. The trouble is concentrated where the car meets the smartphone.

You might expect that spending more money buys a smoother experience. The data says the opposite. In the dependability study, problems among premium vehicles jumped 8 PP100 to 217 PP100, the highest since the study was redesigned, while the gap between premium and mass-market vehicles widened to 17 PP100. Premium brands underperformed mass-market ones in seven of nine categories, and the largest single gap appeared in features, controls, and displays.


This is the segment most eager to fill cabins with edge-to-edge glass and passenger-side screens. That eagerness is not translating into satisfaction. Overall long-term dependability hit its highest recorded problem count since the 2022 redesign, at an industry average of 204 PP100, and technology performance is a large reason why.


Automakers love to promise that software will get better after you buy the car, delivered silently through over-the-air updates. Owner experience does not match the pitch. Among owners who received an update, only 27 percent said it improved their vehicle, while 58 percent noticed no difference at all. Worse, updates delivered over the air produced a nearly 14 percent increase in problems, adding 2.5 PP100.


JD Power's Jason Norton, director of auto benchmarking, framed the gap plainly: "Software updates and new technologies should enhance the ownership experience over time, yet many vehicle owners cite ongoing mobile phone integration problems and little to no benefit after an update is performed." His solution leans heavily on communication and owner education.

The temptation to solve every design problem with another display is running into hard evidence that owners do not want it. A JD Power technology study found that passenger-side display screens were among the most problematic technologies at 21.3 problems per 100 vehicles. And people are not even using them: 35 percent of owners with a passenger screen said they had never touched it, while just 6 percent used it every drive.


There is a safety dimension too. Among owners who complained about being distracted while driving, 46 percent blamed the infotainment system or touchscreen. The screens meant to make driving easier are, by owners' own accounts, pulling attention off the road.


In an earlier study, Lisa Boor, director of customer success, OEM solutions for Power, noted that "the goal isn't simply fewer buttons, but also intuitive design." Data there showed that a blend of touchscreen and physical buttons enhances usability. The problem is not screens existing; it is screens replacing controls that worked fine as knobs.


There is a structural reason the screens keep multiplying even as they generate complaints. Screen-based controls are far cheaper to build than mechanical knobs and switches. That cost advantage does not disappear because a survey says owners are unhappy. As long as a large display costs less to install than a bank of physical buttons, automakers have a financial reason to keep going, whatever the quality data says.

The broader technology picture reinforces the point. Even as overall new-vehicle initial quality improved, with reported problems falling from 192 to 175 per 100 vehicles, infotainment was the lone category to move the wrong way. When nine of ten measured categories improve and one gets worse, the outlier is not bad luck. It is where the industry's incentives and its owners' preferences diverge.


Treat the infotainment system as a core part of the test drive, not an afterthought. Pair your own phone before you leave the lot and run CarPlay or Android Auto through a full drive, because connectivity is the most common failure point across the entire industry. Try changing the climate and answering a call while stationary, and notice whether the system fights you.


Be skeptical of a cabin that has replaced every physical control with glass, and be especially wary of premium models leaning hardest into full digital cockpits, since that segment currently posts the widest gaps in features, controls, and displays. Do not assume an over-the-air update will fix what bothers you later; most owners report no benefit from them. If a car still offers real knobs for the things you touch constantly, that is a feature worth valuing, not a sign the automaker was too cheap to add another screen.
