If you’re looking for the cheapest Kruger gate, there is a catch: no gate is cheaper to enter than another. Every visitor pays the same daily conservation fee wherever they come in.

South African citizens and residents with an ID pay R134 per adult and R67 per child per day until 31 October 2026. From 1 November 2026 the SANParks schedule lists R140 and R70. Wild Card members don’t pay the daily fee when they show their card and ID.

So the real saving lies in how you get there, not which gate you use.

THE SHORTEST DISTANCE GATE

SANParks lists Numbi as the shortest drive from Johannesburg at 411km. You take the N4 to Nelspruit, then the R40 to White River and the R538/R539 to the gate.

Malelane follows closely at 428km, entirely on the N4 via Witbank and Nelspruit. Phabeni is 430km and Paul Kruger is 460km, both via Hazyview. Less distance means less fuel, but the gap between the top three is only about 20km. So, the savings are not massive.

The better money-saver is choosing the gate closest to your camp. Berg-en-Dal is about 20 minutes from Malelane, and Pretoriuskop is about 20 minutes from Numbi. A gate that looks cheaper on the map can cost you more in fuel once you’ve driven a long internal route to your camp. Malelane is also handy if you’re staying at Berg-en-Dal or Malelane camp, as it keeps you on the N4 the whole way. The N4 is a toll road. So, check current tariffs when you budget.

PRACTICAL TIPS TO CONSIDER

Some travel guides advise using Phabeni instead of Numbi for safety and security reasons. I’d check SANParks’ latest travel advisories before settling on Numbi, even though it is the shortest route.

Practical tips

  • Carry your ID or driver’s licence for every adult in the car. Without it, you’ll be charged the international rate (R602 for adults at the time of writing).
  • Gates are cashless, so bring a card.
  • Gate times are strictly enforced. Late arrivals are only allowed in emergencies.
  • During the festive season, gate quotas apply. Once the daily quota is reached, only pre-booked visitors get in.

For the lowest cost, pick the gate nearest your camp. If you have no preference, Numbi is shortest on paper, while Malelane is the simplest N4 run. The cheapest option is whichever route puts you in the park soonest.
