Viewers are curious to know the reason behind Joe Miñoso‘s departure from Chicago Fire as Cruz. He has been a part of Firehouse 51 since Season 1. He made his final appearance on the show on November 4, but will continue to be part of it as a director later this season, which has always been his dream.

Cruz leaving Chicago Fire wasn’t Joe Miñoso’s call

Miñoso didn’t leave the show willingly; it was the creative team’s decision to write off his character.

In a conversation with USA Today, Miñoso opened up about his departure from Chicago Fire. He said, “It’s 15 years of a life that I’ve lived inside of someone’s skin. There’s no way that there isn’t going to be some level of grief.” He further added that when he was a recurring actor, he was genuinely happy that they wanted him to continue. It made him feel that they wanted to keep him around, which he considered an honor.

The actor mentioned that he learned about his character being written off on the last day of filming Season 15. He added that he kept staring at the cast photos on the wall while sitting in the producer’s office, realizing that he wouldn’t be a part of the show now. However, he did look at the positive side of getting a chance to get behind the camera for a show that he had starred in for years.

How Chicago Fire says goodbye to Joe Miñoso’s Cruz

Joe was not killed off on the show but exited naturally, with the doors still open for a potential return in the future.

In his final appearance, Joe’s wife gives birth to the twins. Archer visits Joe in the hospital, praising the progress he has made with his injury and how he could potentially rejoin his job. However, Chloe gives him a very disappointed reaction, which makes Joe think about his family’s needs at present.

Ultimately, Joe informs Severide that he won’t be rejoining Firehouse 51 and has decided to move to Minneapolis. This decision leaves Severide shocked.
