Why Texas A&M football’s Mike Elko didn’t bench Marcel Reed after brutal pick-six vs. Alabama appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

As the Texas A&M football team got crushed by Missouri on Oct. 10, 27-6, the team came back and blew out The Citadel, 41-0, as the hope was that they could take the positive momentum and beat the Alabama Crimson Tide on Saturday. However, the Texas A&M football program would lose to Alabama, 31-20, with more conversation surrounding the quarterback situation with Marcel Reed as head coach Mike Elko comments on it.

On the Aggies’ first drive of the contest, Reed threw a pick-six, which jump-started what would become an impressive win for the Crimson Tide. Elko would even be asked after the contest if he ever thought to bench Reed and instead play Brady Hart, with the coach admitting “it was for sure a thought.”

“Yeah, absolutely. It was for sure a thought,” Elko said, according to Carter Karels. “Obviously, it couldn’t continue to go that way. So we were ready to do that. And then Marcel obviously went back out and played probably his best football for the rest of the first half.”

“I still believe he’s our best option, so that’s kind of why we stayed with him,” Elko continued.

By the end of the contest, Reed threw for 163 yards to go along with a touchdown and two interceptions, as Elko spoke more about the overall disappointment of the game.

“I think the story on offense is obviously the start, the two turnovers leading to seven points,” Elko said, via Roll Tide Wire. “We put it together for a little while after that and then just really couldn’t get anything going in the second half. Then got to a point again where we were down and trying to chase a game. We’re not built to do that, and that’s on me as a coach. We’re not where we need to be at all in that regard.”

“Defensively, extremely poor play in the secondary, extremely poor eye discipline, extremely poor everything,” Elko continued.

At any rate, the Aggies look to bounce back in their next game on Nov. 7 against South Carolina.
