Buckle up, Wild fans. It sounds like Dylan Larkin could be traded within the next two weeks. Will it be to Minnesota?
“I think there’s going to be a trade within 7 to 10 days in Detroit,” John Buccigross said Friday on the Frankly Hockey podcast. “I got a little bit of information last night that tells me that we’re going to see a trade. Things are happening in the lineup that… that’s all I’m going to say.”
“It has to be Larkin then, right?” asked Frank Seravalli.
“Yeah, Larkin,” Buccigross answered.
Minnesota has been connected to Larkin since he requested a trade in early June.
The situation gets more interesting when you understand that Detroit has had top members of its front office and scouting department in person at Wild games over the last couple of weeks.
Detroit assistant general manager Kris Draper scouted the Wild’s 3-2 loss against the Buffalo Sabres on Oct. 6. Interim GM Shawn Horcoff was at the Wild’s 3-2 loss to Tampa Bay on Oct. 8. Then, Red Wings pro scout Boyd Gordon was reportedly in St. Paul on Monday night for the Wild-Golden Knights game.
According to Seravalli, Horcoff appears to be the frontrunner to earn the full-time GM job.
“I would say that it feels like, probably at least for Horcoff’s sake, a glacier moving at glacial pace, but it sounds like he might be in the driver’s seat to ultimately be the next GM whenever this president of hockey ops, his boss, is hired,” Seravalli said in his conversation with Buccigross.
The rumored price for Larkin is steep.
“Three or four pieces,” Darren Dreger said on TSN’s Early Trading this week. “Two A-quality prospects, a top-9 forward who can play with the Red Wings in the NHL right now, and on top of all of that, a first-round draft pick.”
The Wild could probably offer a convincing package featuring Danila Yurov (he’s the top-9 forward Detroit would need), Charlie Stramel, another prospect, and their 2027 first-round pick. That’s a pretty solid package, especially if landing Larkin helps convince Quinn Hughes to sign an extension.
We’ll see what happens, but if Larkin gets dealt within 10 days, the Wild are definitely one of the teams to watch.
