Ian Wright has expressed his disappointment that Arsenal missed out on the signing of Morgan Rogers to Chelsea.
Arsenal were interested in a deal to sign Rogers from Aston Villa, but refused to meet Villa’s demands. Chelsea pounced to snap up the England international in a £117m club record deal, and Rogers has impressed across his opening performances.
The 24-year-old has scored once and provided an assist in two Premier League games, ahead of facing Arsenal for his new club this afternoon.
Reflecting on the summer window, ex-Arsenal striker Wright said he felt the Gunners ‘did need’ Rogers to complete their frontline.
Speaking to Sky Sports’ Stick to Football podcast, Wright said Rogers could have been a difference-maker to complement the club’s current options. He outlined his belief that Rogers ‘would have loved’ to have come to Arsenal if a deal was done.
“I think we did need Rogers,” Wright said.
“You say we have got those types of players but that is what Mikel wanted. It is a position where we need that player. Of course Saka is back, Odegaard is back, Havertz is back and playing together, but he wanted that difference-maker.
“He is the one we were linked with ages ago and he would have loved to have come, I can feel it.”
