TIFF has officially unveiled the trailer for Zack Snyder‘s latest drama-action thriller, The Last Photograph. The new preview teases a psychological thriller filled with brutal violence, mystery, and surreal imagery that promises a far darker tone than his DCEU superhero films.
According to the synopsis, ex-DEA agent Ethan Black (Stuart Martin) travels to South America. He travels there to seek revenge for his diplomat brother and sister-in-law’s death. He searches for their missing nephew and niece while seeking answers about their murder. Joe Wallace (Fra Fee), a drug-addicted conflict photographer, joins Ethan’s hunting search. What is happening in The Last Photograph’s trailer? The trailer opens with Ethan Black (Martin) living a solitary life in a green mountain landscape surrounded by goats. Then it introduces the washed-up junkie war photographer, seemingly consuming drugs.
One scene shows shirtless Black riding a boat through the dark waters surrounded by a forest. The 174-second trailer shows the difficult journey of the photographer and DEA operative through various sequences. After learning about the brutal murder of his brother and sister-in-law, the former Narcotics agent goes on to eliminate their killers. He enlists the help of the photographer, who happens to be a witness to the tragic crime.
Their journey takes them beyond civilization and deeper into remote wilderness. As the footage progresses, the story takes an increasingly surreal turn. Shocking violence, disturbing dreamscapes, and intense psychological tension give it a deeply grim tone.
Zack Snyder, known for directing 300, Man of Steel, and Justice League, used his own story for the film. Kurt Johnstad penned the screenplay and has an extensive work experience with the filmmaker. Hans Zimmer composed the score alongside Omer Benyamin and Steven Doar.
The Last Photograph will make its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 13. However, the movie has yet to get an official theatrical release date and distributor.
